Lets start with little Information about WIFI6. WiFi 6 is the most recent WiFi standard. The most recent WiFi standard is 802.11ax (WiFi-6), which is an improvement above the previous standard, 802.11ac (WiFi-5). Wifi 6 is an updated standard that allows compatible devices (such as routers) to transmit wifi signals more effectively.

The First impression:

It seems to be a standard white rectangular box router with four external antennas. It is an AX1800 router, with 2.4Ghz (574Mbps) and 5Ghz frequencies (1201Gbps). It distinguishes itself with a four-antenna system (rare at this price) that enables two transmit and two receive MU-MIMO streams. Without getting too technical, this means that a combination of 2.4GHz and 5GHz devices will have adequate throughput.

The 5Ghz additionally supports OFDM and 64/256/1024QAM, allowing it to aggregate excess bandwidth of up to 1200Gbps. And let me tell you, it did not let me down. The Surface Pro 7 connected at 1.2Gbps at 2m and 721Mbps at 5m, indicating a solid, powerful antenna design.

Setup – maybe the easiest I've used:

  • Connect 12V/1A adapter that comes with the box and also connect network cable.
  • Connect to a wireless Wi-Fi network called “Xiaomi XXXX” generated by the Xiaomi Mi Router AX1800 using a mobile device or a computer search.
  • In a web browser, enter miwifi.com or 192.168.31.1 to configure.
You can also use the Mi Home app but its a hit and miss.
  • All requires fresh Wi-Fi and Admin passwords, and that's it.

Within the router's firmware:

MiWiFi has a clean, straightforward UI, and no default settings need to be changed. However, if you don't have an AX device, such as the Samsung S21 or the Microsoft Surface Pro 7, you should disable AX support because it introduces an AC compatibility mode. It also contains all of the standard Open WRT operating system smarts, such as IPv6, MAC Address clone, DHCP/DDNS/Static IP, VPN QoS, and UPnP. (disabled by default). You may modify the LAN IP settings, but I like that it utilizes 192.168.31.1-255 rather than the standard 192.168.0.0 – especially if you want to swap out existing networks.

About Ports and Range:

Three dedicated gigabit LAN connections and one WAN port are provided.

15m line of sight from router576/-60187/-61

Speeds are MBps and -dBm signal strength

These specifications are excellent for the price, particularly the 5Ghz to 15m range (and it could have gone a couple of more metres). This should adequately cover a 15-meter-diameter circle, or around 170m2.

Conclusion:

It's a fantastic router with a Qualcomm IPQ 6000 CPU, four separate antenna amps, and WRT open-source software (wrapped in MiWi-FI skin). The antenna's strength is exceptional. Xiaomi claims that it can handle 128 devices in principle. We believe that 10-15 on 2.4Ghz is more feasible.

If you can position this in the home's dead center, it will function well.
Readers inquire about their privacy. My assessment is that we examined utilizing Fing Box, Trend Micro Home Security, and Nortons 360 and found no evidence of data exfiltration. We believe Xiaomi is a good investment. We believe Xiaomi is a relatively secure and excellent value bet.

Positive:

  • Low-cost yet high-performance
  • 170m2 coverage is excellent.
  • Wi-Fi AX performance for a Wi-Fi AC protocol that is extremely simple to configure

Negative:

  • There are no mesh 'controls'; it is either on or off.
  • Xiaomi Mi Home app is not so good.
